Massey Herbarium, Virginia Tech

Robert Snider, Allen Askew, JP Prieko and Vince Allen are introduced to the function of an herbarium by Assistant Curator, Tom Wieboldt (center).
Plant specimens are preserved in cabinets, arranged taxonomically by family. Each cabinet in the herbarium contains files of voucher sheets organized according to genera.

Voucher sheet for Carex juniperorum, a rare sedge known only from Kentucky, Ohio, southern Ontario and Wildwood Park, City of Radford, Virginia. This is one of the newest additions to the flora of Virginia.

Multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora), noxious weed of pasture and road sides. This alien species was introduced to Virginia to serve as a living fence on agricultural lands.

Multiflora rose in fruit. The berries are eaten by birds and thereby rapidly dispersed across farmland.
