Abstract: This module presents content material on the life zone concept, looking at C. Hart Merriam's scheme for temperate North America and several schemes developed for tropical areas. Ecological, evolutionary, and biogeographical implications of mountain landscapes are noted. Review questions prompt students to compare altitudinal and latitudinal zonation patterns in different parts of the world. There are links to interactive virtual field trips to alpine habitats.
