Article I: Name
The name of this organization shall be Society for Advancement of Management affiliated with the National Chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management.
Article II: Purpose
SAM's mission...to prepare members for future business interactions through conducting sessions and activities that will enhance their business and communication skills.
Article III: Membership
Membership in this organization shall be open without restriction as to race, color, religion, age, national origin, handicap, veteran status, political belief, or sex. Members must belong to the national organization through the payment of national dues.
A.) Paid membership carries active voting privileges. (Paid membership entails paying both the national dues and the local dues. Local dues will be determined by the executive board on a yearly basis.)
B.) Voting qualifications are as follows: 1. members must be currently enrolled at Radford University; 2. membership must be in good standing as defined by the current executive board; 3. members must have paid their dues to the national and local organization. Privileges include participation in activities and programs sponsored by the organization.
Article IV: Meetings
A.) A quorum shall be defined as one-third of the members.
B.) Meetings will be held a minimum of five (5) times per academic semester and special meetings may be called whenever deemed necessary.
C.) Business will be conducted according to Robert's Rules of Order (newly revised). In case of voting tie, the President will cast the deciding vote.
Article V: Officers
A.) Only full-time students (12 hours - undergraduate; 9 hours - graduate) may serve as officers. In addition, they must be a paid member.
B.) Duties of the officers are as follows:
1.) President: Provides leadership and overall direction for the campus chapter. Prepares and maintains a calendar of scheduled chapter events. Coordinates all fundraising events with the treasurer.
2.) Executive Vice-President: Assists the President in the management of campus chapter affairs; fills in for the President his/her a absence; oversees the details for the Fall Social and the Spring Banquet; helps with the organization of membership for the International Conference; does an Audit@ of the treasurer at least once a semester and anytime a treasurer resigns; and serves as the chairperson of the Banquet/International Conference Committee.
3.) Vice-President of Membership: Contacts prospective members to present the benefits of SAM membership; recruits for the campus chapter; assists in completing membership applications; maintains membership and points records; and serves as chairperson of the Membership Committee.
4.) Vice-President of Programs: Develops and implements programs (seminars, speakers, plant tours, workshops, etc.) for the campus chapter; obtains refreshments for meetings; and serves as chairperson of the Programs Committee.
5.) Vice-President of Publicity: Develops, implements, and maintains an effective promotional campaign for all campus chapter events; updates the SAM bulletin board; appoints a chapter photographer from the membership; obtains a gift for every speaker; and serves as chairperson of the Publicity Committee.
6.) Secretary: Conducts correspondence with the members and relevant others; issues announcements at all meetings; prepares and maintains the minutes of all meetings; assists all other officers on an as-needed basis.
7.) Treasurer: Receives and disburses funds and manages the financial affairs of the campus chapter; keeps a voucher system to account for all expenses; prepares an annual budget and does periodic reconciliation and revisions as needed; knows balance at all times; hands books over to Executive Vice-President as requested (at least once a semester); and serves as chairman of the Fundraising Committee.
8.) Parliamentarian: Insures the proper use of parliamentary procedure in the conduct of the campus chapter; oversees the publication of two newsletters per semester; appoints a member to update the campus chapter web page; and serves as chairperson of the Publications and Services Committee.
9.) In case of resignation or dismissal, the outgoing officer must notify the Executive Board, which consists of the officers and advisor(s). The unoccupied position will be filled by appointment by the Executive Board unless the unfinished term of the officer is longer than a month before the annual Spring elections, in which case an election will be held to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term.
10.) A majority vote of the members present will determine the election of officers. Officers will be removed by the Executive Board if they fail to meet membership qualifications, fail to execute the duties of the office, or fail to satisfactorily attend the general and executive board meetings, unless excused by the President or Advisor(s).
11.) Elections will be held during the Spring term for the following academic year.
12.) Officers will serve a term of one (1) full academic year, unless they are graduating at the end of the Fall Semester or are unable to finish their commitment due to unforeseen circumstances.
Article V: Advisor(s)
A.) Current management professors in the department who have taught at Radford University for at least one academic year will be eligible to be the campus chapter advisor(s).
B.) The advisor(s) will be elected by a majority vote of the members present and will be removed in a similar fashion if necessary.
C.) The advisor(s) is/are expected to work closely with the campus chapter in coordinating activities to insure they are conducted in appropriate fashion and in accordance with the rules and policies of Radford University, as well as local, state, and national laws.
D.) The purpose of the advisor(s) is to help give members guidance in policies and procedures concerning this organization as well as the general field of management.
Article VII: Committees
A.) Standing Committees are formed at the beginning of the Fall term and meet at least once a month during the academic year.
B.) Standing Committees are as follows: 1. Fundraising Committee; 2. Programs Committee; 3. Publicity Committee; 4. Membership Committee; 5. Publications and Services Committee; 6. Banquet/International Conference Committee
C.) Members sign for committees in which they have an interest. A designated Executive Officer serves as chairperson for each committee. In case of a voting tie, the chairperson will cast the deciding vote.
D.) Special event committees will be set up as needed by the campus chapter.
E.) Each committee chairperson (Executive Officer) will report committee activities at each executive and general meeting as appropriate.
Article XIII: Commonwealth of Virginia
The Society for Advancement of Management will adhere to Radford University policies and the constitution and laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Radford.
Article IX: Amendments
A.) Proposed amendments to the constitution of the Radford University chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management will not be voted on until the following regular meeting after they are submitted. A two-thirds vote of the members present shall be required for adoption.
B.) Any revision of the constitution and/or bylaws must be approved by the Office of the Dean of Students.
