COURSES

HLTH 111. Personal Health. (3)
Three hour lecture.
Assists students with life adjustment problems, supplies scientific information, stimulates effective behavior and encourages better living. (Students who have earned credit for NURS 111 may not earn credit for HLTH 111.)

HLTH 200. Wellness Lifestyle. (3)
Two hours lecture, two hours physical activity per week with laboratory assessment.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.
Provides students with the knowledge and skills to keep themselves healthy and fit for life. The lecture provides information on health knowledge. The activity classes introduce a variety of fitness skills and techniques in order to help the individual pursue lifetime fitness. The laboratory assessments provide personal health/wellness data. All three components are integrated to promote a commitment to a wellness lifestyle.

HLTH 321. First Aid and Safety. (3)
Three hours lecture.
Studies of attitudes, habits and skills relative to safety, first aid and accident prevention.

HLTH 410. Drivers Education Theory. (3)
Three hour lecture.
Prerequisite: Junior status.
This course imparts knowledge, attitudes, skills and methodology needed to teach drivers education. This is the first of two courses required for drivers education certification.

HLTH 411. Principles of Accident Causation and Prevention. (3)
Three hours lecture.
Covers nature and scope of the accident problem, a positive philosophy of safe and/or accident­producing behavior, various areas of safety education, principles of organization and administration of safety programs and methods and materials for behavior modification.

HLTH 412. Driver Education­Driver Task Analysis. (3)
Two hours lecture; two hours laboratory.
Pre­ or Corequisite:
HLTH 410 and current Virginia driver's license.
Critical analysis of highway transportation system, the driving task, traffic problems, factors contributing to performance of highway user and knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for competence of traffic citizens. Develops traffic citizen competencies and introduces methods and materials to develop those competencies in others.

HLTH 423. School Health Instruction. (3)
Three hours lecture.
Prerequisite: Junior standing.
Stresses planning and construction of health and safety curricula to meet the needs, interests and abilities of elementary and secondary students. Reviews content and theory of health science.

HLTH 445. Foundations of Health. (3)
Three hours lecture.
Presents scientific knowledge of health and disease; student formulates a philosophy based on principles and foundations of health.

HLTH 450. Current Health Problems B Topical. (1­5)
Hours and credit arranged according to nature and scope of selected topic. Study of implications selected current health problems hold for educator, their effects on society and possible means for their amelioration. May be taken twice.

HLTH 451. Drug Use and Drug Abuse Education. (3)
Three hours lecture.
A study of the effects of drug use and abuse upon society and the public schools.

HLTH 452. Human Diseases. (3)
Three hours lecture.
Prerequisite: Junior standing.
Study of nature, prevention, control and treatment of human diseases and principles related to causality of disease and the body's ability to resist.

HLTH 453. Human Sexuality. (3)
Three hour lecture.
Prerequisite: Junior Standing
A study of information, education and communication about human sexuality as it relates to people in our society.

HLTH 455. Family Life Education Teacher­Training. (3)
Three hour lecture.
Prerequisites:
HLTH 200, HLTH 423 and junior standing.
HLTH 455 imparts knowledge, attitudes, skills and methodology needed to teach family life education to students in grades K­12.

HLTH 460. National/International Health. (3)
Three hours lecture.
Analysis of public and international health issues as they relate to the individual, community and society.

HLTH 465. Exercise, Performance and Nutrition. (3)
Three hour lecture.
Prerequisites:
HLTH 200 and BIOL 322.
This course is designed to examine the relationships of exercise, physical activity and performance as they relate to nutrition. It includes basic information on human energy systems, weight control, sports nutrition and proper diet.
