Louisiana State University (LSU)
Dean, The Honors College

Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College (LSU) seeks an outstanding individual to provide vision and leadership for one of the nation's leading public university programs for superior undergraduate students.  The LSU Honors College enrolls nearly six hundred freshmen and sophomores in a sequence of challenging team-taught interdisciplinary lecture/seminar courses, and another six hundred juniors and seniors, including seventy-five who are pursuing upper division honors in their majors. In the 1990s, students enrolled in the Honors College won virtually every major national and   international recognition available to baccalaureate graduates, including National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships, Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater and Mellon Fellowships, and other comparable recognitions. Honors College graduates have gone from LSU to the world's leading graduate and professional programs. Faculty who teach in the Honors College are committed to interdisciplinary study and to the pursuit of learning through close, interactive discussions.

The Honors College is magnificently housed in the heart of the LSU campus in the French House, a gift to the University from the French government that is listed on the National Historic Register. The French House includes a grand salon as well as Honors faculty and administrative offices and five handsome  seminar rooms reserved for the Honors College.  Immediately adjacent are East and West Laville Halls, a residential college for Honors College students.  Together, the French House and East and West Laville constitute an Honors College complex unrivaled among the nation's public research universities.

The Challenge: The University wishes to expand the Honors College and to advance it to the highest levels of national recognition. While preserving its current lower-division sequence in philosophy, literature, and the history of ideas, the new dean will lead the faculty in the development of new curricular options outside the current humanities core, specifically in the arts, social sciences, sciences, and technology. A freshman residential college opening in the fall of 2002 centered on immersion in information technology points to the kind of new direction the Honors College might pursue under the leadership of its next dean. In addition to providing leadership and management for the Honors College per se, the dean is expected to be an effective advocate for enriched and expanded honors offerings within departmental majors and a leading exponent of LSU's commitment to challenging students to achieve the highest levels of intellectual and personal development. The dean will play a major role in fund raising. The Dean reports to the Provost and maintains active liaisons with other administrators of the University.

Required Qualifications:  The dean will hold a terminal degree appropriate to one of the disciplines of the University and must be able to qualify for a tenured appointment in one of its units. The dean must be committed to intellectual liberty and free inquiry, to the value of a diverse learning community, and to nurturing interdisciplinary activities. The dean must possess strong leadership qualities with special emphasis on advocacy and institution-building.   The dean must have a distinguished record of teaching, of scholarship and/or creative accomplishments, and of administrative experience. The dean should be prepared by intellectual character and temperament to be boldly innovative in building a nationally distinctive Honors College.

LSU is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Extensive University by the Carnegie Foundation, and is also one of only 25 universities nationwide designated as both a land-grant and a sea-grant university. LSU is the flagship research university in Louisiana's public system of post-secondary education.  LSU currently  (fall 2001) enrolls over 31,000 students. In 1999-2000, LSU awarded more than 5,200 degrees, including over 3,800 bachelor's degrees and 275 doctorates (Ph.D. and Doctor of Musical Arts).  Baton Rouge, located on the Mississippi River 70 miles north of New Orleans, is the state capital and the geographical center of South Louisiana's famed cultural, historic and recreational attractions.

The position will be available as of July 1, 2002.  Salary will be competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications. Applications should include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of five references.  Nominations are encouraged.  The review of applications will begin on February 1, 2002 and will continue until an appointment is made. All correspondence should be addressed   to:  Daniel Fogel, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Louisiana State University, Ref:  Log #0602, Baton Rouge, LA 70803. E-mail: evcp@lsu.edu.  Fax: (225) 578-5980. The University's web site, www.lsu.edu, includes LSU's strategic plan (follow the "Planning" link on the home page to the "University Planning Document") as well as links to the Honors College and to the full array of programs and opportunities at LSU.
