The workshop utilizes Chinese puppet theater to present an interdisciplinary curriculum for art, music and social studies classes. The traditional Chinese puppet theater incorporates literature and music with visual and performance art. Making the puppets involves the craft of carving, painting and embroidery.
Crystal Yang will demonstrate a simplified and modernized method of making Chinese puppets in order to make this program feasible for school teaching. In addition, she will offer comparisons between American and Taiwanese schools and discuss how to create a free and constructive learning environment for children at different age levels, while using Chinese puppet theater to enhance the curriculum.
Qin He will present a short concert of Chinese folksongs. Afterward, she will teach modern and traditional Chinese children's songs to the workshop participants. Marilyn Meador will assist with instruments.
The climax of the workshop will be the preparation and presentation of a chinese children's story, The Seven Chinese Brothers, in a puppet theater show. Workshop participants will learn to manipulate and perform different characters using puppet figures. Interactive teamwork will be used for the designing of dialogue and scenes, performing with the puppets, stage lighting, and sound effects.
The mixture of hands-on activities, lectures, multi-media presentations, and discussions will offer a stimulating and enlightening experience for school teachers and university students.
