Beautiful weather, great food and most importantly, the highly motivated SVKC walking team raised $4500 towards the grand total of almost $300,000! Not too bad for a first time effort! (From E-Builder, Mar04) The Shenandoah Valley Club has been busy during the winter months. As February comes to a close they have accomplished one of their main goals for the year. On Friday, February 25, Bessie Weller Elementary School in Staunton had their first meeting of the new K-Kids Club. We are in the process of applying for a charter and are so happy with the way the students and sponsor have responded with goals for the new K-Kids.They are looking to accomplish a service program for an individual, their school and perhaps the larger community of Staunton/USA. Keeping Youth as our priority, our club will be involved with the Office on Youth conducting practice job interviews. The youth are video-taped and then watch as they are coached on how to interview for a job. In addition, as a community service, members of the club have provided 41 volunteer hours at the local movie theater to help keep a movie theater open in downtown Staunton.

(From E-Builder, June 2005) The month of May has been busy for the SVKC. We ended last month with the Chartering meeting of the Bessie Weller K-Kids Club on April 27. Parents and Kiwanis Club members attended and watched as the club was officially chartered.

We are proud of the students for they quickly got their service projects planned and completed this spring which included reclaiming a stream that runs by there school by planting trees and shrubs with the help of the Dept. of Water and Soil Conservation. They also have worked on a number of projects to raise money for the American Cancer Society and will walk in the Relay for Life June 3.

The SVKC will be walking also. Our Kiwanis Club has raise more than $3600 for the American Cancer Society. Our team leader, Debbie Walker, had everyone participating by raising and contributing money. She and 9 other members will be walking all night on June 3rd to help combat cancer.

In addition to the K-Kids, the SVKC participated with the Staunton Office on Youth for a “Kids Matter Day”. The club read to children and handed out over 650 books to those who attended. The club also helped with the Staunton Fine Art Festival in the Children’s Art Tent. There they helped young children create their own works of art.

On June 18th there will be a Chicken BBQ at the Staunton Farmer’s Market from 8-12 A. M. Come and buy our BBQ chicken if you are in town.
