The NEWEST Club in Division 17, the Kiwanis Club of Germantown, held it's Charter Night and Installation of Officers and Board Members on Friday, November 1, at the Willow Tree Inn, overlooking the Montgomery Village Gulf Course.

Charter President Steve Poteat ran a tightly scheduled program, which included Guest Speaker Bruce Johnson, talking about the past and furture of Germantown. Other guests included State Senator Jean Roesser, State Senate candidate (now newly-elected Senator) Rob Garagiloa, County Council candidate (now newly -elected Member) Mike Knapp, and Board of Education candidate Kevin Schuyler, who is also President of the Cresent Trail Kiwanis Club. The program began and ended with patriotic songs, led by Silver Spring President DPLG Joe Zeis.

The official Charter Ceremony was conducted by Immediate PLG Bill Herrmann, who also handed out New Club Building Awards. Each new member present was presented with their Charter Member Certificate, Kiwanis pin and name badge. Charter President Steve Poteat, Charter Vice President Joe Felton, Charter Secretary Alice Gordon, Charter Treasurer Michael Mussio and Charter Board Members Derek Johnson, Joshua Hykes, Deborah Malkovich, Dave Martin and John Mercer were installed as officers and directors of the new Kiwanis Club of Germantown.

Eleven clubs in Division 17 were well-represented. PG John Tyner and all eleven clubs made special presentations of gifts for the new Germantown Club. North Bethesda's gift was a brand new American flag, which was already in place and ready for the Pledge of Allegiance. The Past Governor's present was the Germantown club banner. Leisure World's gift was the bright, shiny, new gong. Wheaton presented the new gavel. Bethesda gifted a new portable lecturn. Rockville's gift was a set of miniature international flags, and Silver Spring presented a Maryland flag. Gaithersburg's gift was a road sign to let everyone know when and where the new club meets (Room 007, HS Building, Montgomery College Germantown, 7:30 AM Tuesday). Rossmoor presented a photo album to help record club history. Crescent Trail's gift was a storage box for 110 name badges and a challenge to the club to fill it! Olney presented a check for $50, and the Greater Burtonsville club gave a Kiwanis apron (usable for fund raising OR washing dishes!).

The Germantown Kiwanis Club is now gearing up for its first project "Rick Watch". They will implement the program which is part of a Maryland state grant that the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service has provided for the Germantown Boys & Girls Club.

Year End Statistics: 16 Projects Completed, 87 Service Hours, $1150 Spent, 1 Interclub
