Description:  Inner Quest is a national leader in outdoor adventure training and education. Three (3) month program offered each Spring (beginning mid-March), each Fall (beginning mid-August) and limited positions during the summer (beginning mid-May). There are 10-20 opening each year and participants successfully completing the program will be considered for full-time positions with INNER QUEST if they so desire. The Apprentice Program's objectives are to provide training and work experience in the skills required to be an INNER QUEST instructor (25 days actual training, 35 days leadership work experience.), provide the apprentice with the opportunity to determine his/her suitability for a career in experiential education, and provide INNER QUEST with an opportunity, through evaluation, to determine whether to offer the apprentice employment at the end of the program. Applicants should be 18 years of age or older, have an intense desire to learn, work hard and develop into a professional member of INNER QUEST staff during their tenure of the apprenticeship. Although the program includes training in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First-aid, INNER QUEST prefers that applicants have current Red Cross qualifications in First-aid, CPR, and Water safety or Lifeguarding. Experience in backpacking, rockclimbing and spelunking is desirable, but not necessary. Applicants who have or are pursuing a college degree preferred. The primary prerequisites are maturity, interest and stamina. Level I Instructor training will include--safety, instructional methods, challenge course, rockclimbing, map and compass, general knowledge, rope management, expedition leadership, emergency care, spelunking, canoeing, kayaking, water rescue, physical fitness and logistics. Apprentices will be responsible for providing transportation and housing accommodations. Assistance will be provided in helping to located housing and arranging possibilities for car pooling. A stipend of $1000 will be granted each apprentice. The actual amount will determined based on the applicant's educational background and experience in the field of outdoor recreation. The program is oriented toward technical skills and applicants with a strong background in facilitation skills (teaching/counseling) are preferred. A major qualification is a strong desire to learn, work and be part of a team.

Description:  Participation in this program gives undergraduate students an opportunity to observe at close hand how a federal grant-making agency does business. Fellows also have opportunities to learn about the work of similar federal agencies and cultural institutions. Fellows will participate in the work of the Endowment for 9 1/2 weeks during the summer of 2000. Fellows will be assigned, in most cases, to one office of the agency to assist in daily work and to undertake special project. Summer fellows will also have opportunities to learn about the work of similar federal agencies and cultural institutions. College students who will be entering their junior or senior year in Fall 2000 are eligible to apply. Graduate students are ineligible. Applicants must have declared an undergraduate major in one of the disciplines: History, Philosophy, Languages, Linguistics, Literature, Archaeology, Jurisprudence, the History Theory, and criticism of the Arts, Ethics, Comparative Religion, and those aspects of the social sciences that employ historical and philosophical approaches. Applicants must be U. S. citizens; foreign nationals who have been legal residents in the United States for at least three (3) years; or territorial of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, or the Commonwealth or the Northern Mariana Islands. The NEH will provide a fellowship of $4,000 to each winning fellow. The fellow will be responsible for travel to and from Washington, DC, as well as for housing and board expenses during the 9 1/2 week tenure of the fellowship. Successful applicants will report to the NEH in Washington, DC, on June 2, 2000. The fellowship concludes on August 9, 2000. The applicant must submit the following materials: letter of nomination for the Summer Fellowship, written by a professor in one of the disciplines of the humanities who can attest to the applicant's abilities and seriousness of purpose, a completed NEH Application Cover Sheet, a current transcript, a brief essay explaining the applicant's interest in the humanities and into the Summer Fellows Program--the essay should include a description of the applicant's relevant academic, work, and volunteer experience: such as assistance in community projects or tutoring; volunteering in neighborhood cultural centers, libraries, and museums; or participating in special projects in the humanities. Applicants should be judged on evidence of interest in and knowledge of the humanities and commitment to work in the humanities field. Travel expenses, housing, and board will be the responsibility of the grant recipient.

Description:  The National Gallery of Art is offering internships to candidates from all backgrounds for the Summer 2000. Intern should have a strong interest in a museum career. Description:  Interns receive academic CREDIT while working for one semester in Senator Charles S. Robb's Washington, DC or Richmond office. Widely assignments may include: conducting background or legal research for new legislation and speeches, helping publish press releases and newsletters, monitoring and reporting on committee hearings and floor debate, assisting with constituent requests and correspondence, assembling basic reference materials. Throughout the semester, each intern also works with faculty advisors from his or her school to develop an appropriate study program that complements the internship and meets academic requirements. Typical assignments are regular readings and a topical research paper. Internships terms and dates are--Summer (May 29-August 18, 2000); Fall Internships (September 5-December 15, 2000); Spring Internships (January 15- May 4, 2001). All internships applicants must be registered students during the internship period and have their school's agreement to offer credit for the internship (the amount of credit and necessary requirements are decided by the school). Applicant must also be a 3rd or 4th year (junior or senior) undergraduate, or a graduate or professional student., have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, be a U. S. citizen and a legal resident of Virginia (as classified for tuition purposes). A variety of program options are available for each semester. To assist with living expenses, interns will receive a stipend: Full-time ($950 per month); Part-time ($475 per month). Interns will be responsible for making their own housing arrangements in both Washington, DC and Richmond; however, Senator Robb's staff will assist interns with suggestions about available housing. Interns selected must have high academic standards and a potential for leadership indicated by: academic record, work experience, extracurricular activities, interests and maturity, and reference letters. Working under the supervision of a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, students learn to admit, examine, diagnose, medicate, feed, and handle animal patients. Description:  The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts is a large performing arts organization that presents a wide spectrum of the performing arts: music, dance, theatre, opera and related education programs.
