One of the great literary attractions of Coole Park is the Autograph Tree--a copper beech about which Lady Gregory wrote: "And on the great stem, smooth as parchment...many a friend who stayed has carved the letters of his name" (quoted from the 2001 Coole Booklet).

The Autograph Tree still bears the carved initials of Lady Gregory's guests.  The plaque by the tree helps to identify those names (click to enlarge it).
