The Appalachian Regional Studies Center (ARSC),
a division of Radford University's College of Arts and Sciences,
is located in the lower level of the Buchanan House on the Radford
University campus and serves as headquarters for the Appalachian
Studies Program. The center is directed by Dr.
Grace Toney Edwards, who is assisted by faculty members
Ricky Cox,
Ruth Derrick, and staff member
Kerri Huff.
The ARSC houses the Appalachian Folklife Archives, where some 1000
field collection projects and their accompanying recordings, videotapes,
slides and photographs are available for use in the university program.
Approximately half of these are Appalachian folklife projects, and
the other half feature Appalachian literary, media, history, sociology,
and anthropology projects. In addition, the ARSC houses a
growing collection of audio and videotapes, CD's, DVD's, record
albums and selected print materials. It serves as an information
clearinghouse for the university community and the surrounding region,
and as a resource center for Radford students and faculty, as well
as for other scholars and educators in the Appalachian region.

The Appalachian
Regional Studies Center is also the home of several programs enhancing
the Appalachian experience at Radford University: the Appalachian
Events Committee (AEC), the Farm at Selu, the Highland Summer Conference,
the Appalachian Teachers' Network (ATN), the Assembly on the Literature
and Culture of Appalachia (ALCA), and Appalachian Arts and
Studies in the Schools (AASIS).
