VIRUS ALERT!
Chris Hollomon | Tech Section Manager

Graphic By: Rachel Thomason Please be extra careful as you download or receive e-mail attachments from friends and especially from people you don't know. There is a new virus that has been popping up around Radford and on the Internet lately. The Virus is a MS Worm Virus. If you receive the file "MeltingScreen.exe," DO NOT RUN OR OPEN IT. Instead, delete it immediately. For help in doing so, you can call the Radford University Computer Help Desk at 831-6300.

The e-mail message often comes featuring the tag line or subject "Fantastic Screensaver." This is a companion virus and worm virus in one. It is also referred to as "Win32.Melting" and "I-Worm.Melting."

The virus changes the names of windows .exe files to .bin files and then replicates itself as the original windows .exe files.

According to a letter sent by the RU Computing Help Desk, "The NAI Virus Center is now testing a solution for combating the problem." If your computer is affected, contact the Help Desk immediately, and you are encouraged to leave info about your experience in the feedback area below.
