Speak N Spell: the Retroputer
Brian Korte | Executive Director
If you can't remember those long car rides as a child with your Speak and
Spell, you can feel ashamed no more, thanks to a downloadable program
called Speak and Spell Simulator (SASS). SASS is exactly what the name
suggests: an almost exact replica
of the Texas Instruments Speak and Spell toy.
I don't know about you, but this author spent many a car trip playing with the
family's Speak and Spell. Word games like "Say It" and "Mystery Word" remain
timeless classics in this ingenious little program that downloads in just a
few
short minutes from the SASS Web
site.
Pretty soon, you'll find yourself recalling all of the classics, spelling out
dirty words and doing all of that good stuff like you used to do when you were
younger. For those of you who didn't grow up during the late 70's and
80's, it
may be a mystery to you how the newer generations seem to be so quick at
learning computers. With games like those found on the Speak and Spell,
you can discover for
yourself how Texas Instruments broke the "computer intimidation" barrier with their Speak
and Spell model. SASS is the closest thing to it. Check it out for a free
download.
By the way, if anyone is interested, the designers of SASS are developing a
Speak and Math simulator as well. This was my absolute favorite. The SASS
site has announced the plans, but the page is last dated November 1999. I
suppose only time
will tell.

I went home this past weekend, and dove into the toy closet. I popped some new C batteries into my Speak and Math, and boy, did those memories flood my brain. That was a rewarding 15 minutes. :)
