Ask a geek what they want in a good operating system. If they know what
they're talking about, they'll tell you that they want protected memory,
preemptive multitasking, a good solid kernel, and an easy-to-use GUI. Apple
will set the benchmark for all of these things this summer with MacOS X
consumer. And more.
Let's be honest, there are typically two ends of the spectrum when it comes
to computer users: On one end, you've got the UNIX and Linux users that
love the complexity and ability to tweak those systems. On the other hand,
you have Macintosh users who typically don't care that much about HOW their
system runs, but are only concerned THAT it runs. So what happens when you
take the complexity and stability of a UNIX kernel and put a Macintosh user
interface on top of it? The best damned operating system one could ask for.
MacOS X consumer will incorporate many new technologies such as OpenGL
rendering and Quicktime to present a stunning user interface called Aqua.
Also, legacy Mac users need not fear this new beast. MacOS X consumer will
run all of your already existing software, but will not take full advantage
of all of the great new features it has to offer.
Developers have already pledged allegiance to this new system when it is
slated for release this summer. Even if you're not a Mac user, you may want
to take a closer look at MacOS X consumer as it's release date nears.
