Two years ago, the boo-tay kicking Blade, based on the Marvel Comics character, opened in theaters to good reviews and even better box office receipts. After years of flops like Captain America, Howard the Duck and The Punisher, a great movie based on a Marvel character was finally made. Comicdom at large rejoiced.
Continuing this trend will no doubt be this summer's X-men. Just looking at the people involved with the movie ensures that it will be great. Brian Singer, director of the super-duper mega-cool Usual Suspects (and if you haven't seen this movie, please, go see it. Now.) is helming the film. Avi Arad, the president of Marvel's film division, will be handling executive producer duties.
The film also sports a top notch cast. Patrick Stewart, of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame is playing Professor X. This made many fans happy, as for years, everybody said that Stewart would be the perfect Professor X. Ian McKlellan, of Gods and Monsters (another great movie you really need to see) and the Singer helmed Apt Pupil. Famke Janssen, of Goldeneye, is playing Jean Grey, while Oscar winner Anna Paquin is playing Rogue. Jim Caviezal of The Thin Red Line is playing Cyclops, while relative unknown Dougray Scott gets the coveted role of Wolverine. As for the bad guys, super model Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is playing the shape shifting Mystique, pro wrestler Tyler Mane takes on the role of Sabertooth and Ray Park, the guy who played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I is playing Toad. Rumors were flying that Keanu Reeves ("whoa!") would have a cameo at the end of the film as Gambit (my personal favorite of the X-men). This rumor has since been shot down, but sources aren't ruling out the possibility of this in the (inevitable) sequel.
Anyway, that cast alone should have you foaming at the mouth. Yet in an interview with Wizard magazine, executive producer Arad assured fans that the move will be faithful to the comics. He promised that the costumes "will have similarities to their comic book counterparts." Yet he also said that the costumes will be "sort of a new design." Anyone who has seen any of the two trailers for the movie can attest to just how awesome these costumes are.
As mentioned above, sequels to the movie are inevitable. In the same interview, Arad gave little info on the movie, other than the fact that The Beast (another one of my personal faves) will be in it. He offered no other hints, such as a plot or a villain (personally, my money is on Mr. Sinister. Or maybe Apocalypse).
Information about this movie seems to come out on almost a daily basis. You can keep abreast of it by checking out these sites: Cinescape Online, Ain't It Cool News, or you can go straight to the horse's mouth and check out the movie's official site.
The movie is scheduled to open July 14th. All I can say is, it's going to be a long three months.
