The Best Band You're Not Listening To: Far Too Jones
Shaun Corley | Ritz Section Manager

Graphic By: Kimber Meletzke You might remember the Far Too Jones single "As Good as You." It came out about this time last year. It was terrifyingly catchy, and I could relate to it quite well. Then again, you probably don't. It got decent radio airplay (practically every time I heard it on the Buzz, rest in peace, it was really late at night), but no eMpTyV exposure.

Far Too Jones hails from Raleigh, North Carolina. There must be something in the air down there in Raleigh, as a number of bands hail from that area, like The Connells and Atheneaum. They released one album and an EP independently before signing with Mammoth Records in 1998. Their first major label album, Picture Postcard Walls , produced by long time Toad the Wet Sprocket collaborator Gavin MacKalliop, was released early last year. They are currently in the studio recording a second album, due out later this year.

Like The Connells and Atheneaum, Far Too Jones has a poppy/roots rock type of sound. Yet unlike the other two groups, Far Too Jones' lyrics are darker, heavier and far more brooding, and most of them deal with relationships. The aforementioned "As Good as You" is an anthem of self-loathing and desire accompanied by a catchy chorus. Other good examples of this sound can be found in "Close to You," a gentle ballad about going from one relationship to another; and "The One" and "Falling Back Down" are both about abusive relationships.

If you are a fan of groups such as Toad the Wet Sprocket, Counting Crows or the Wallflowers, then Far Too Jones is right up your alley.

"The Best Band You're Not Listening To" will now be a semi-regular feature here on Whim.
