What Will You Be wearing For Spring 2000?
Sarah Ellinger | Staff Writer

Graphic By: Jenn Peterson Radford students are saying that the first spring of the new millennium isn't going to be bringing a great deal of change to the world of fashion. The clothes you wore last spring are still going to be popular for this one. Don't empty out your closets and go buy a whole new wardrobe. Students say the millenium hasn't changed much of anything, especially not fashion.

RU female students do have some favorites for the first spring of the millennium. You can expect to see, besides lots of Greek letters, many girls wearing their most comfortable outfits. They say that tight is out and loose-fit shorts are in. Anything digging into the waist and causing major wedgies is definitely out.

RU females prefer canvas drawstring khakis, terry skirts, loose carpenter shorts, linen drawstring pants (specifically J-Crew) and those ever-popular cargo shorts. Shirtwise, you don't have to worry about emptying your wallet because girls say they will be wearing lots of classic and v-neck tees of all colors. Also, another popular shirts for college girls are the three-quarter length shirts and polo shirts, which became popular last year.

Just so the guys don't miss out on the fun, girls said they would most definitely own a reversible tube top. For some reason, guys love it when girls wear tank tops. They're in for a treat because this spring, most tank tops have a scoop neck. For those of you who don't know what that is, a scoop neck is basically a regular tank with a lower neck and may send guys' eyeballs searching for more. The most mentioned bathing suit was the tank bikini. Sorry guys, this one doesn't reveal much. All of these things could be found last year in stores; the only difference is that girls say they will be wearing more pastels this year.

On the other hand, guys at RU are not as specific when asked about spring fashions. They don't seem to care as much as girls when it comes to clothing.

Basically, RU males are going to be wearing underwear (thank heavens), a t-shirt (from anywhere) and a pair of shorts that fit. After some research, I found out that they are absolutely right: men's fashions this spring are very casual. The most popular pieces of apparel are cargo khakis, Hawaiian shirts, t- shirts (AE or Abercrombie were recommended often) and polo shirts. For accessories, guys simply are going to wear the original baseball caps. Their feet will mostly be covered by Tevas, Birkenstocks or tennis shoes. It won't take much effort for a guy to look fashionable this spring. RU males will be simple and comfortable, while still looking good.

Styles have not changed much here at Radford, or on any other campus for that matter. However, students did have some opinions for spring fashion no-no's:

  • White canvas Keds
  • White jean shorts for guys
  • Winnie the Pooh paraphernalia
  • Plaid shorts for men (unless you are a red-head for RU)
  • Daisy Dukes (butts are not attractive)
  • Floral shorts (these are fine for 60+ year olds)
  • Loafers and khakis
  • Stinky tennis shoes (please wear socks to eliminate gagging in class)
  • Hairy legs for women
  • Sunless tanning spray (looks more orange than tan)
  • Tanning bed queens (it's a little early to be wrinkled)
  • Sun Visors (for gardeners only)
  • Colored socks
  • Tevas or Birkenstocks with socks: there is a reason why they are called "SANDALS."
  • Speedos-we don't need to see your "thangs."

What I would consider an opinion on spring fashion is that students would like to see more different styles of speedos for those who dare to be different!

I love it here at Radford in the spring when the weather gets nice. Women seem to wear less and less.

This spring I will be wearing the same stuff I wore over winter except I'll leave the coat at home :-)

I've never let the world of fashion take me on. I've worn the same type of thing since I was allowed to dress myself, and you know what? It's the timeless classics like my wardrobe which live on. Jeans, solid tshirt, and a long sleeved shirt rolled up. Same damned thing. Every damned day. And that's the way I like it. So there. :)

What makes Tommy Hilfiger's clothing so popular. Would people buy it if the logos weren't so big? OR NOT EVEN THERE?

Not only is clothing an issue for college students, it will also be important when we go out and apply for jobs. Sadly, but true, companies do pay attention to how their employees dress and this is especially true for people who are getting interviewed. America is way to materialistic, but it is not just our generation. For the rest of our lives, we will be faced with material things. It is ridiculous, but it is reality.

Hell yeah, Jeff! This summer, I shall be found in my ratty old rock band t-shirts, khaki pants and Chuck Taylors!

it says that people are wayyyy too materialistic. I'm not saying I'm ammune to this, but I agree that it is wildly ridiculous. Whatever happened to my velcro shoes, damnit?

Of course, you can ignore what students say and wear whatever the heck you feel like wearing when you want to wear it, the norm aside. My $7 flannel shorts are the most comfortable and sturdy shorts I own. Even better than the $60 combed cotton Polo shorts I have. If this is a campus that harbors mature students, then clothing should not be an issue. Sadly, it is. Now, what does that say about this "generation?"
