Stomach Flu: The Basics

What is it?

Most stomach flu is caused by a virus.  Viral gastroenteritis is an infection that can cause diarrhea and vomiting.  People can get the infection if they:

  • Touch an infected person or a surface with the virus, and then don’t wash their hands.
  • Eat foods or drink liquids with the virus.
  • If people with the virus don’t wash their hands, they can spread it by touching other people.

Symptoms

People can have either diarrhea or vomiting or both. These symptoms usually start suddenly and can be severe.

Viral gastroenteritis can also cause: fever,  headache or muscle aches, belly cramping or loss of appetite.

Should I go to a health care provider?

It is not necessary to be seen for this virus.  The virus usually only lasts 24-48 hours.

What is the treatment?

  • Stop all solid food and milk products.  Drink only clear liquids, ex Gatorade, kool-aid, sprite, ginger ale, etc.  for 24 hours.
  • You do not need antibiotics as they will not treat the virus.
  • Avoid people as it is easily transmitted to friends and class mates.

Call the doctor or nurse if you:

  • Have any symptoms of dehydration - dehydration can make you have dark yellow urine, feel  dizzy or confused.
  • Have diarrhea or vomiting that lasts longer than a few days
  • Vomit up blood, have bloody diarrhea, or have severe belly pain
  • Haven’t urinated in the past  8 hours (during the day)

Prevention

To lower the chance of getting or spreading the infection, you can:

  • Wash your hands with soap after you use the bathroom and before you eat
  • Avoid contact with someone who is vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Avoid grouped activities if you are having vomiting or diarrhea.

Pink Eye

The most common cause of pink eye (conjunctivitis) is viral and is associated with the common cold.   If you are a contact wearer and have conjunctivitis, please schedule an appointment at the Student Health Center for evaluation.

Bacterial conjunctivitis causes a pink or red eye and usually causes a yellow or green discharge not only in the morning but throughout the day. It is important to see a health care provider if the eye discharge occurs throughout the day.

Allergic causes of pink eye are usually in both eyes and is associated with other allergic symptoms such as sneezing and clear running nose.

There are no definitive tests for diagnosing a pink eye as a bacterial, viral or allergic cause.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call the Student Health Center.
