SCI Symposium Fall 2016

Highlights

The SCI Poster Competition was inaugurated in Fall 2016 and offered a glimpse into the experiences and growth of each contestant. Six competitors submitted posters to the competition, and each poster shared the competitor’s subject and journey of growth. Hanna Mitchell, a mathematics and biology major, won 1st place with her poster on her experiences with the Radford Amazonian Research Expedition (RARE). Ben Smith won 2nd place with his group’s poster on providing basic healthcare to Appalachians in need through a Remote Area Medical, or RAM, trip, told via presentation and a very detailed poster.

Taylor Brock and Marisa Dameron, who both graduated as Scholar-Citizen Fellows this past December, cogently presented their ePortfolios at the ePortfolio Showcase.

Three Nursing professors, Dr. Eunyoung Lee, Dr. Linda Ely, and Dr. Megan Hebdon, presented on their plans to create a SCI Pathway for nursing students.

Perhaps one of the most engaging presentations was given by Dr. Michele Ren and Ms. Kelly Nickell, a Graduate Teaching Fellow. Their workshop, titled “Mapping Identity: A Workshop from Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice”, provided a practical approach to discussions on how we create our identity and how we can constructively interact with those whose identities may be very different from ours. At one point in the workshop, participants were invited to share stereotypes about them that they found offensive. The conversations that followed were civil and more focused on listening to understand rather than to respond. This workshop in particular not only helped attendees expand their horizons and challenge their prejudices; it gave them the tools to have equally meaningful conversations in their everyday lives.
