Prerequisites: Graduate Standing in Nursing or Permission of Instructor
A conceptual development of brain-behavior relationships for individuals with mental illness and psychiatric disorders and application to practice.
2. Detailed Description of Course
Development of advanced skills for the differential diagnosis of mental and substance use disorders using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Online course: apply knowledge and skills applicable to mental illness using the brain and behavioral paradigm, demonstrate proficiency in interviewing skills and behavioral assessments with this population, online discussion, individual presentations.
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course
1) Apply theories and models of assessment and treatment to a variety of patient populations.
2) Demonstrate cultural competent care among patients with diverse psychiatric disorders and
different developmental stages.
3) Demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic skills using the DSM.
4) Demonstrate interviewing and observational skills, use and interpretation of screening and
diagnostic tools; along with lab tests and behavioral assessments.
5) Design interventions that are both comprehensive and collaborative.

Participation with online learning, discussions, presentation of case studies demonstrating knowledge of assessment and diagnostic skills
