Prerequisites: Graduate Standing in Nursing or Permission of Instructor
Explores evidence based health promotion and disease prevention interventions and initiatives targeting population-based health.
2. Detailed Description of Course
Provides an overview of health promotion and disease prevention with an interprofessional focus. Students will be introduced to theories and models frequently used in health promotion. Data will be used to identify health status of patient populations. Evidence based health promotion and disease prevention interventions and initiatives will be evaluated.
3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Online Course: Use of appropriate databases to identify health status of populations; Student facilitation of online discussions; Critique of health prevention intervention study; Individual & group presentations; Health promotion project proposal.
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course
1) Discuss disease prevention and health promotion initiatives consistent with the Healthy People
2020 objectives.
2) Analyze theories and models that provide the foundation for health promotion & disease
prevention interventions.
3) Identify relevant and appropriate data and information sources for health promotion/disease
prevention in populations.
4) Apply principles of epidemiology to draw inferences regarding the health status of diverse
client populations.
5) Differentiate between individual or clinical interventions and population level interventions.
6) Evaluate strategies related to health promotion/disease prevention that are sensitive to
culture, gender, ethnicity, and age
7) Design population interventions for health promotion and disease prevention.
