NURS 633: Advanced Practice Nursing in Rural Communities

Prerequisite: Graduate standing in Nursing or permission of instructor

Credit Hours: (3) Three hours seminar

This course will focus on the advanced practice nurse’s role in health promotion and illness prevention through understanding community dynamics, applying principles of epidemiology, community assessment, and program development for aggregates in rural communities.

Topical Outline

1. Health promotion of rural families and communities.

2. Interaction of individual, illness, wellness and family dynamics on health status.

3. Principles of epidemiology and demography in identifying health problems of families and aggregates.

4. Community assessment and health planning in rural communities with contrast to differences with urban populations.

5. Planning interventions.

6. Evaluating interventions.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This online course may incorporate lectures, faculty/student directed discussions, class participation, reading assignments, and written work. Because the course is online, audio or video presentations/lectures, discussion boards, chat rooms and other instructional technology strategies may be used.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Incorporate strategies of risk analysis and reduction, screening, lifestyle enhancement, and disease detection and prevention into all aspects of primary care practice.

2. Analyze the interaction of individual, illness, wellness and family dynamics as they affect health status.

3. Analyze clinical problems using an epidemiological approach.

4. Interpret epidemiological data for relevance to clinical practice.

5. Utilize community assessment to identify population needs, community resources, and develop appropriate programmatic interventions.
