Topics in Aging II

Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Interprofessional Graduate Certificate in Gerontology, GERO 601

This is the second core course required for the student enrolled in the Certificate program.  This course addresses, from a case study approach, the topics presented in GERO 601.  It expands the student’s critical thinking in solving a particular aging issue.

2. Detailed Description of Course

An interdisciplinary approach will continue to encompass this course and each department, in the Interprofessional Gerontology Consortium.  Topics in Aging I will be expanded upon to include a case study approach, whereby students develop an intervention strategy to address a specific aging issue.  Technology will be provided to create an interactive environment between faculty and students.  This is the second required course in the certificate program.  

Content: The objectives and content of this course are derived from the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) Education Standards.  Major topics and skills covered in this course are based on current evidenced-based research and theory related to Gerontology.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The following teaching strategies include but are not limited to seminar discussions, lectures, podcasts, student online presentation, and written projects/papers.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:
    1) Critically appraise published evidence used in decision making of aging challenges.
    2) Develop an evidence-based paper on a particular intervention strategy used in solving a
        particular aging situation.
    3) Critically evaluate an aging situation and its implementation and designated outcomes.

5. Assessment Measures

May include but are not limited to oral presentation, analysis of aging situations, and a paper.
