THEA 231: Stagecraft

The study of scenic and costume construction methods including equipment and drafting techniques commonly used for theatrical scenery and costumes including the practical application of these techniques through backstage participation in departmental productions.

Detailed Description of Course

The purpose of the course is to expose the student to the basic principles of stagecraft construction with emphasis on adaptation to actual theatrical construction procedures

1. Basic hand sewing skills.
2. Basic sewing machine maintenance and skills.
3. Patterning skills.
4. Building materials and methods.
5. Mechanical drawings.
6. Two and three-dimensional scenery.
7. Rigging of scenery.
8. The stage and its equipment.
9. Stage properties.
10. Colour and painting techniques

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

A hands-on approach in which the discovery of the principles used in stagecraft will be emphasized.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. To gain a solid understanding of the skills used in scenic and costume construction.
2. To acquire a common vocabulary used for scenery and costumes.
3. To develop an understanding of the construction processes used in scenic and costume construction.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate the basic skills and processes used in building scenery and costumes.

Assessment Measures:

Graded assignments may include in-class tests, a final examination, pop quizzes, the assignment and presentation of mechanical drawings and class preparation and participation.

Other Course Information

The instructor may demonstrate drafting techniques using a computer.
