MUSC 375: Influence of Music on Behavior

Prerequisites: Upper level standing as a music therapy major
Pre- or Corequisites: MUSC 102.Study of uses of music, past and present, and its effect on man's behavior

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The purpose of this course is to have students explore the variety of ways in which music is a major influence on individual and group behavior. The major areas that will be covered in this course are:

• Ethnomusicology
• Music and the Behavioral Model
• Music and the Medical Model
• Music and the Humanistic Model
• Music and the Affective Response
• The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music/Transpersonal Model
• Music and the Synesthetic Response
 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lecture, student presentation, and group discussion. Consideration of course principles as they relate to theoretical foundations of the profession of music therapy.

 
Goals and Objectives of the Course
• To explore the functionality of music in social and cultural contexts
• To develop a general understanding of the relationship of music therapy and related professional disciplines
• To observe and analyze musical events and types of music in terms of function and effect
• To review/explore literature pertinent to the influence of music on behavior
• To write and report in an appropriate style


Assessment Measures

Graded assignments will include topic papers, analyses of musical events, written exams, classroom presentations
