INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER MUSIC (WI)

MUSC127. Introduction to Computer Music (WI)
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisite: Music major.

Introduction to current digital technologies used in the creation, manipulation, and distribution of sound and music using MIDI hardware and software applications. Develops skills that are essential for the production and distribution of music using digital technologies through project- based assignments and examinations.

Note(s): Humanistic or Artistic Expression designated course.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course discusses the history and the general social implications of advances in technology, with emphasis on their application in the field of music. The MIDI protocol is learned and practiced using appropriate hardware and software. Music software applications in music sequencing and musical notation are learned and practiced. Web applications for researching and gathering information, for the design of personal web pages, and for the dissemination of music projects created in class are learned and practiced. Practical and ethical uses of these technologies in public, private and professional life are also discussed.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course will include lecture, demonstration, and laboratory assignments. Students will use MIDI controllers, music sequencing software, and music printing software to compose, orchestrate and perform music. Students will use web creation software to create or supplement personal web page to distribute images and sounds on the world wide web. Students will share the results of their projects with one another in class.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will develop understanding of the MIDI protocol and basic computer hardware operations. They will be able to critically and creatively utilize appropriate music hardware and software in music composition, orchestration and performance. Students will be able to create web pages that include images and sounds. Students will have an understanding of the historical development of technology and its social implications and applications in the lives of amateurs and professionals.

Assessment Measures

Objectives of the course will be measured using an array of assessment tools that include verbal and written tests, and printed and/or electronic laboratory assignments.
