MUSC 100. Introduction to Music Literature (GE)
Three hours lecture (3).
Examination of music literature of all periods; emphasis on standard concert repertory. Development of essential listening skills and understanding of music of other cultures. Required of all music majors and open to students in other curricula.

Detailed Description of Content of Course
Study of music as an art and profession, from all periods of European art music from Medieval through 20th Century. Study of American music and music of other cultures. Listening appropriate to the above. Review of the elements of music.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students will read about music and listen to music from various periods. Sound and video recordings of musical performances will be used. There will also be occasional presentations of live music. Discussion of analytical and personal impression aspects will be provided in the classroom. In addition to western art music, in-class listening and discussion will also include music to be selected from the music of African, Asian, Australian, Balkan, Middle Eastern, South or Latin American cultures; music of native North Americans; and other music of America and Europe.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Students should develop the ability and desire to listen to all types of music, develop an aesthetic sensitivity for live performance, relate works of western art music literature to their context in music history, and relate different types of music to their cultural context.
Assessment Measures
Grades will be based on written and listening tests, and the final exam.
Other Course Information
Students will be encouraged to present any ethnic or national music from their own background. Guest lectures on other cultural backgrounds will be arranged whenever possible.
