Supervision and Consultation

Prerequisites: Admission into Psy.D. program or permission of instructor

Credit hours (3)

This course will include a didactic and may include an experiential aspect. Students will learn about various approaches to supervision and consultation and may also conduct supervision of less experienced graduate students and consultation with peers and community organizations under the oversight of a licensed psychologist.

2. Detailed Description of Course

This course may include the following topics:
• Definition of supervision and consultation and differentiation of supervision from consultation.
• Description of the ethical and legal issues associated with supervision and consultation, especially in rural areas
• Identification of the importance and impact of cultural issues in supervision and consultation.
• Description of major approaches to providing supervision and consultation.
• How to conduct supervision sessions at an appropriate level of skill.
• How to know one’s limits of competence in conducting consultations.
• How to write appropriate supervision notes and consultation reports.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course will include a didactic and may include an experiential aspect. Students will learn about various approaches to supervision and consultation and may also conduct supervision of less experienced graduate students and consultation with peers and community organizations under the oversight of a licensed psychologist. Students will read a book and articles on topics related to conducting supervision and consultation in an ethical, culturally competent manner, will watch demonstrations of supervision and consultation, and may conduct their own supervision and consultation sessions that will be critiqued by the course instructor, among other activities.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the end of this course the student should be able to:
• Define supervision and consultation, and differentiate supervision from consultation,
• Describe the ethical and legal issues associated with supervision and consultation,
• Identify the importance and impact of cultural issues in supervision and consultation,
• Describe major approaches to providing supervision and consultation,
• Conduct supervision sessions and consultation at an appropriate level of skill,
• Know one's limits of competence in conducting supervision and consultation, and
• Write appropriate supervision notes and consultation reports.

5. Assessment Measures

Evaluation of student’s performance in class discussion, in class activities, on exams, in provision of supervision and consultation to other graduate students, and on a paper and presentation using an A-F scale.
