PSYC 671: Theories of Personality

A thorough, critical evaluation of major classic personality theories with emphases upon the assumptions and implications of each theory.

1. Philosophical Assumptions
2. The Psychoanalytic Approaches
3. The Dispositional Approaches
4. The Phenomenological Approaches
5. The Behavioral Approaches
6. Critical Evaluation of Current Personality Theories

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course is conducted in a lecture format in which the emphasis is on individual theorists and related issues. Discussion, as appropriate, is encouraged.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The student will explore several class approaches to the understanding of personality. Other goals include: the development of an understanding of the procedures and difficulties of personality research; an appreciation of the importance as well as the complexity of personality theory; and, student will increase knowledge of self and others.

 

Assessment measures

Graded assignments may include in-class tests, a final examination, the assignment and presentation of exercises, and reports, and class preparation and participation.
