MSCI 395: United States Army Cadet Command (USACC) Military History Course

Prerequisites: ENGL 112

Credit Hours: (3)

This course meets the US Army Cadet Command military history course requirement for comissioning. This course analyzes the evolution of American warfare from its colonial origins to its current conflicts. Students will analyze the relationship of the military to American society and the importance of military history to the professional officer. This course is reading intensive.

Detailed Description of Course

This course discusses how to view and analyze military history and dedicates class sessions to American military actinos in each American War. Major topics include:

1) Introduction to Military History: An Analytic Framework
2) History of small arms technology
3) Friction, the 10th principle of war
4) Colonial Origins: Anglo-American Warfare 1607-1763
5) The American Revolution: A strategy of attrition
6) The Civil War: American Military Policy
7) The Origins oif Military Professionalism
8) Napoleonic Military Strategy
9) Limited was vs. Total War
10) To the First World War: Making War More Lethal. 1871-1914
11) The First World War: Strategy of the Great War 1914-1918
12) Oral Presentations: Interwar Military Innovations
13) The Second World War
14) The Korean War
15) The Vietnam War
16) The Middle East. Post Cold Was and the Global War on Terrorism

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course will consist of primarily lecture and small group activities. Students will conduct oral and written presentations.

Goals and Objective of the Course

Upon successful completion of teh course students will be able to:
    1) Analyze relationship of the military to American society
    2) Evaluate the importance of military history to the professinoal officer
    3) Describe the evolution of war and the progression of military professionalism
    4) Evaluate the impact of history on current joint military operations
    5) Discuss the role of history in understanding the military profession
