COMS 640: Internship in Strategic Communication

Prerequisites: Graduate standing, permission of the supervision instructor, and permission of the Graduate Coordinator

An opportunity for practical application of communication theory to practical contexts. Requires a written proposal and approval if the Graduate Coordinator.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course provides an opportunity for students to practice in an applied context what they have learned in the academic setting. The content of the course will vary depending upon how the practical experience is tailored to the particular needs of the student.

 

Detailed Description of the Conduct of Course

The specific conduct of the course will negotiated between and among the student, the Graduate Coordinator, the supervising instructor, and the organization/individual with which/whom the student will complete the internship experience.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

  • To provide a structure environment in which students can experience the practical aspects of corporate and professional communication through specific activities, e.g., research and training.
  • To provide opportunities for students to observe the connection between theoretical understanding and application of those theoretical principles.
  • To provide experiences that will make classroom learning more relevant.

 

Assessment measures

Assessment will be based on the following:

  • Reaction papers
  • Experiential journal
  • Written evaluations from organizational supervisor
  • Written evaluations from supervising instructor
