HLTH 485: Health Program Planning and Evaluation

Prerequisites:  HLTH 245, HLTH 475

Credit Hours: (3)

The capstone course for the Health Education and Health Promotion Curriculum. This course requires students to design and evaluate a health promotion program.


Detailed Description of Content of the Course


This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to prioritize health problems in different populations, make an informed argument regarding the necessity of a health promotion program, and develop a population-appropriate intervention to change the health status of the chosen population. The second half of the course requires students to evaluate the program. Students shall conduct a develop a process evaluation, impact evaluation, and an outcome evaluation of the program they developed in the first half of the course.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students shall gain knowledge and skills necessary for the capstone project through lecture, evaluation of existing health promotion programs, literature searches, and projects. Student projects shall require students to experience a logical and recommended model for planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs.


Goals and Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students shall be able to:

* Identify different models for health program planning and evaluation.
* Review, compare, and evaluate established interventions.
* Identify health problems in different populations.
* Prioritize health problems among different populations according to the severity and cost of the disease or disability.
* Identify risk factors for the targeted disease or disability, and prioritize the risk factors according to changeability and importance.
* Construct health status goals, behavioral objectives, and educational objectives for the health promotion program.
* Develop a health promotion intervention to change the selected behaviors and subsequent health problem.
* Create lesson plans for the health promotion program.
* Compare measurement tools according to validity and reliability, and select the most appropriate measure for each level of evaluation.
* Develop a process evaluation of the designed health promotion program.
* Develop an impact evaluation of the designed health promotion program.
* Develop an outcome evaluation of the designed health promotion program.

Student learning will be assessed through one or more of the following methods:

* Exams
* Group assignments
* Projects
* Presentations
