V. Course Description: This course is designed to enable teacher candidates to plan, organize, and conduct physical education instruction for elementary students aged 5-12. Course content includes research-based principles of effective teaching as they relate to physical education. A special focus involves helping children build a foundation of basic motor skills which can be applied to game play and sport involvement outside of school.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:
Teacher candidates will be provided opportunities to observe teachers and practice teaching in a classroom setting under the guidance of the university supervisor and public-school physical educators. The expectation of students in this course will include lesson and unit planning that contains appropriate content development, peer-teaching and assessment, and instruction of students in local elementary schools.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:
Goals, objectives, and assignments in this class address Society of Health and Physical Educators Council for Accreditation of Teacher Educators/National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (CAEP) Standards (2015) and address Virginia Department of Education Health and Physical Education (VDOE HPE) Licensure Standards.
As a result of successfully completing this course, each teacher candidate will be able to:
- Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills across a variety of instructional formats. (SHAPE 4.1; VDOE HPE 4.a).
- Design and implement developmentally appropriate Physical Education content and instructional strategies for children in grades K-5. (SHAPE 3.3; VDOE HPE 4.a).
- Analyze, describe, and demonstrate critical elements (skill cues) of fundamental motor skills and object control skills. (SHAPE 1.5, 4.2; VDOE HPE 4.a).
- Develop measurable, developmentally appropriate, and performance-based lesson objectives and student learning goals aligned with state and national content standards. (SHAPE 3.2; VDOE HPE 4.a).
- Design and implement progressive and sequential learning tasks (with extensions and modifications) that meet the diverse needs of all learners. (SHAPE 3.5, 3.6; VDOE HPE 4.a).
- Design and implement authentic assessment tools to measure student learning (employing both formative and summative evaluation strategies) of students in grades K-5. (SHAPE 5.1, 5.2, 5.3; VDOE HPE 4.a).
- Identify, analyze and provide corrective feedback based upon critical elements of motor skills and performance concepts. (SHAPE 1.5, 4.3; VDOE HPE 4.a).
