Prerequisite: HLTH 200

This course prepares future physical and health education teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach a fitness education curriculum to students in K-12 schools.  Future teachers must be able to focus student learning on understanding the relationship between a health-enhancing level of physical fitness and the prevention of chronic disease.  

2. Detailed Description of Course

This course prepares future physical and health education teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach a fitness education curriculum to students in K-12 schools.  Future teachers must be able to focus student learning on understanding the relationship between a health-enhancing level of physical fitness and the prevention of chronic disease.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Various instructional methodologies will be used for the course: lectures, practice teaching, review of recorded media, demonstration and participation, and projects.
 
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Goals, objectives, and assignments in this class address Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning (2015), Shape America’s Grade Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education (2013), and the National Association of Sport and Physical Education’s Instructional Framework for Fitness Education in Physical Education (2012).

These goals include;
    1) Fitness Planning: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of personal fitness.
       Students will explain the importance of fitness and active lifestyles, to be able to
       evaluate personal fitness levels, and to create an appropriate fitness plan with goals,
       activities, and timelines that will maintain and improve the levels of physical
       fitness. (VA SOL 3).
    2) Energy Balance: Explain the importance of energy balance and nutritional needs of
       the body to maintain optimal health and prevent chronic disease.
       Students will explain the importance of physical activity guidelines, types of physical
       activity needed for energy balance, importance of physical activity, health-related
       components of fitness, nutrition guidelines, meal planning, screen time, and sleep.
       (VA SOL 5).
    3) Technique: Demonstrate competency in techniques needed to perform a variety of
       moderate to vigorous physical activities.
       Students will develop techniques in cardiovascular fitness, technique when
       developing muscle strength and endurance activities, technique in developing
       flexibility, safety techniques. (NASPE Fit Ed 1)
    4) Knowledge: Demonstrate understanding of fitness concepts, principles,
       strategies and individual differences needed to participate and maintain a
       health-enhancing level of fitness.
       Students will explain the benefits of physical activity/dangers of physical inactivity,
       basic anatomy and physiology, physiological responses to physical activity,
       components of health-related fitness, training principles (overload, specificity,
       progression) and workout elements, application of FITT principle, and factors
       that influence physical activity choices. (NASPE Fit Ed 2)
    5) Physical Activity: Participate regularly in fitness-enhancing physical activity.
       Students will demonstrate physical activity participation (e.g., aerobic, muscle
       strength & endurance, bone strength, flexibility, enjoyment/social/personal
       meaning), create an individualized physical activity plan, and self-monitor
       physical activity and adhere to a physical activity plan. (NASPE Fit Ed 3;
       PRAXIS 3.A.4)
    6) Health-Related Fitness: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of
       health-related fitness.
       Students will explain physical fitness assessment (including self-assessment) &
       analysis, setting goals & create a fitness improvement plan, work to improve fitness
       components, self-monitor and adjust plan, and achieve goals. (NASPE Fit Ed 4;
       PRAXIS 5857 5.B.3)
    7) Responsible Personal and Social Behaviors: Exhibit responsible personal and social
       behaviors in physical activity settings.
       Students will exhibit appropriate social interaction/respecting differences,
       self-management, and personal strategies to manage body weight, and stress
       management. (NASPE Fit Ed 5)

Assessment measures may include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following:
    1) Quizzes
    2) Small group presentation
    3) Content development project
    4) Final exam
    5) Responsible/cooperative behavior
