In this course students will learn what it means to be a social justice leader by examining the ways other leaders center equity and social justice in their practice.

Content

This course is part of a series of courses that introduces students to the discourses and theories on equity and social justice in education and how leaders can enact social justice in their settings and authentically engage their stakeholders and the broader community in facilitating equitable change for their marginalized, vulnerable, racialized, and minoritized populations. In this course, students will learn what it means to be a social justice leader by examining the ways other leaders center equity and social justice in their practice. Scholar-practitioners in this class will critically reflect on their own practices, enactment of policies, and implementation of their change ideas as part of improving their settings.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students may engage in both synchronous and asynchronous online discussions with each other and the instructor, who will provide interactive lectures and presentations on the material. Students will be expected to apply their learning in consideration of how they enact leadership in terms of their problem of practice and their implementation of change ideas.

Student Learning Outcomes

In this course students will

  • Explain the tenets of social justice leadership and how to enact it.
  • Identify deficit ideologies/thinking in practice using analyses of case studies.
  • Identify stakeholders’ expressions of deficit ideologies/thinking in their own context.
  • Learn how to authentically engage the community and stakeholders in enacting change.
  • Learn how to advocate for and engage in community as a way to foster change.

Assessment Measures

Assessments may include but are not limited to reading reflection memos, quizzes, essays, case study analysis, and presentation.
