COED 611: Introduction to Counseling Theories and Techniques

This course is designed to introduce students to the variety of theoretical models that underlie the practice of counseling and techniques associated with them. Theories and techniques that provide a framework for the process of counseling will be explored. The course will provide a systematic, comprehensive and balanced overview of the leading theories and techniques of counseling and psychotherapy. Students will be provided the opportunity to put theory into practice through small supervised experiences using counseling techniques to help focus on three domains:thinking, feeling and behaving.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. Develop and understanding of the profession of counseling--its past, present, and future trends.
2. Develop a knowledge base of counseling philosophy and theories that one can use as a framework for one's work as a counselor.
3. Develop an understanding of the concept of counseling and compare and contrast it with other behavioral science professions.
4. Develop an understanding of the functions of counseling in various work settings, including schools, colleges and community agencies.
5. Develop the ability to compare, contrast and integrate ideas and concepts of different counseling theories.
6. Develop an understanding of the process of counseling.
7. Develop an understanding of the importance of the "counselor's self" in the process of counseling.
8. Develop a base of knowledge concerning the major issues, trends and concerns in the field of counseling today.
9. Develop an understanding of the ethical principles that are guidelines for counselors.
