Social Work professor speaks about his research into school mass shootings on public radio program

Philip Mongan, assistant professor of social work at Radford University, will be a guest on the With Reason public radio program, “Healing in the Era of Mass Shootings.”

Mongan, a U.S. Army veteran, researches and is authoring a book about school mass shootings that involve child perpetrators.

Mass killers aren’t born, he says.

"There is a multi-stage process through which these children move from seemingly normal to mass killer," Mongan said in December while serving as keynote speaker at the 2016 Virginia Juvenile Justice Association annual meeting. "It is a phenomena in which we have to put many pieces together to find the story."

The radio program will air July 15-21 on more than 60 radio stations across the United States.

Listeners in the New River Valley can hear the show at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 18 on Public Radio WVRU 89.9. Programs also are available as podcasts at withgoodreasonradio.org.
