President Hemphill's implementation of Fall Break 2017 message

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff

I am pleased to announce that, in accordance with prior action of the Faculty Senate and subsequent confirmation by the University Executive Council, I recently authorized implementation of Fall Break 2017. Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Scartelli will lead the implementation efforts related to Fall Break, including a revision to the 2017-18 academic calendar. All future academic calendars, beginning with the 2017-18 year, will reflect the Friday of week seven as Fall Break.

During Fall Break, administrative offices will be open; however, classes will not be held. Provost Scartelli will ensure all necessary and appropriate changes and updates are reflected in publications and postings. As a matter of record, the final step in the internal governance process occurred during a meeting and vote of the University Executive Council as reflected in a report dated December 1, 2015. Please be advised that Fall Break will not be implemented for the current year due to insufficient time to adjust the academic calendar without disruption.

As I have previously stated on numerous occasions, internal governance is important to addressing matters of interest and concern for the Radford family. Fall Break is an example of such a matter, which came forward from both the Faculty Senate and the Student Government Association. Through both formal and informal dialogue, from the recent Presidential Open Forums with students, faculty and staff, to the College Orientations and to the recent Budget Planning Summit, the Radford campus community's input, proposals and feedback are necessary to creating and maintaining a culture of inclusion, respect and unity.

Please know that, as your president, I greatly value your input and feedback. By working together, we will continue to enhance the learning, living and working environment at Radford University!

Go Highlanders!

With Highlander Pride,

Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D.
