Hours before the winning numbers were announced for the record $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot, two Radford University faculty members spoke with media about the astronomical odds of winning and the unique financial responsibilities that accompany so much money.

Brenda Hastings, an instructor in Radford University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, said the odds of winning were about one in 292,201,338.

"You have more of a chance of being struck by lightning; you have more of a chance of giving birth to quadruplets," Hastings said to TV reporters on campus Wednesday.

College of Business and Economics Dean George Low put into perspective just how much money $1.5 billion is and offered sage advice about spending, saving and planning for the future.
