SGA leads campus Safety Walk

Radford University's Student Government Association conducted a Safety Walk on Oct. 22.

SGA leaders, including President Colby Bender and Vice President Jacinda Jones, joined a group of about two dozen university administrators and students on a walk through areas of the "light side," or the west side of campus.

Vice President for Student Affairs Mark Shanley, Dean of Students Irvin Clark, Capt. David Underwood of the Radford University Police Department and Radford City Police Chief Don Goodman walked with the group as they addressed unlit pole lights on several streets, concerns about blind intersections and the need for more campus-led trash pick-up initiatives. Goodman urged students to be vigilant of their surroundings and to take care of the city and campus grounds.

"If you see a piece of trash, and you feel comfortable picking it up, do it," Goodman said. "It shows you have respect for your university."

On campus, the group recommended a need for a blue light emergency phone station between the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and the Hurlburt Student Center. These phones are placed by RU police throughout campus.

Similar Safety Walks are held on college campuses nationwide for groups to examine potential safety issues and provide input on safety initiatives for the future.

The Radford University SGA organizes Safety Walks each semester.
