When finalizing his decision on a four-year institution to attend, Radford University kept catching Kevon DuPree’s attention because of its campus size as well as the prominent reputation of the School of Communication.

“The average freshman class size is approximately 30 students, which is just right, especially to create a solid bond with your faculty members. At Radford, you’re more than just a number, faculty actually take time to get to know you on a personal level,” explains DuPree.

DuPree had no doubt that the reasons Radford University and the School of Communication were a good match for him was because of the faculty’s dedication to student success, as well as a welcoming and inclusive campus atmosphere.

“The thing I was most nervous about when I first started college was finding a place to fit in. I’m naturally a reserved person, so for me, it can be difficult to reach out and meet new people,” DuPree says.  “But Radford’s campus has a lot of wonderful people who are constantly smiling and always willing to help in any way.”

Over the past three summers, DuPree has also had the privilege of working with the Quest New Student Orientation program.

“I really enjoyed welcoming my fellow Highlanders to campus and making them feel at home,” DuPree reflects. “Through this experience, I also learned a lot about myself. I’ve done things I never imagined doing, worked with student leaders who are just as passionate as me about Radford, and developed a multitude of skills that I will use once I enter the working world. I owe the majority of my college success to the Office of New Student Programs.”

Since arriving at Radford University, DuPree cites his most memorable experience as having served as the student representative to the Board of Visitors for the 2016-2017 academic school year.

“I found myself getting more and more involved and in my senior year, to be appointed to the highest position a student can hold at the university, is truly an honor and a blessing. It’s been challenging and a lot of hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Serving my fellow students has been a great opportunity, and I don’t take one second of it for granted.”

DuPree also became the Radford University chapter leader of the national honors society, Omicron Delta Kappa.

“Through the various leadership opportunities I’ve taken part in during my time here, I’ve been fortunate to interact and become friends with students from all walks of college life,” explains DuPree. “Radford has become a second home for me.”

With commencement just a week away DuPree is looking toward the future, “I want to remain open-minded and not limit myself to what I can achieve in life.” DuPree reminds us all, “Never be afraid to dream big!”
