Summer Residential Director

The Medicine and Health Sciences Governor's School at Radford University in Roanoke seeks a highly motivated individual to serve as a residential summer director. The application is open until filled.

The director must meet the following requirements:

  • Have prior experience working with youth
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents and Governor’s School staff and faculty
  • Demonstrate responsible, ethical, and professional conduct   
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must submit to a background check and return all hiring documents
  • Must be willing to live in the Patrick Henry in Roanoke, VA June 17 - July 20, 2024
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and will be trained to drive vans

The residential director is responsible for the following:

  • Plan and execute counselor training from June 17-22, 2024
  • Supervise three residential summer counselors 
  • Help organize and run extra-curricular activities
  • Demonstrate responsible, ethical, and professional conduct   
  • Must be willing to work with Governor’s School faculty/staff each day, working in a positive and supportive capacity with them
  • Other duties as assigned

The Governor's School Residential Director must be mature, energetic, sociable and enjoy working with teens. They must also be flexible and demonstrate an ability to think and act quickly in cooperative ways with other counselors, the program director, and faculty.

The residential director receives lodging and meals in addition to a stipend.

Residential Summer Counselors

The Visual & Performing Arts and Humanities Governor's School at Radford University seeks highly motivated individuals to serve as residential summer counselors. The application window is now open and interviews for qualified applicants are currently underway. Interested candidates are strongly urged to immediately apply. The final selection of candidates will be completed by with final selections by April 1, 2024, or until positions are filled.

All counselors must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older before June 23, 2024
  • Must submit to a background check and return all hiring documents before May 1
  • Must be willing to live on campus (in a residence hall) June 23 - July 20, 2024
  • Must attend counselor training from June 16-22, 2024
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and will be trained to drive university vans.

Each residential counselor is responsible for the following:

  • Supervise 15-18 rising high school juniors and seniors. This includes dining with the students, making sure they get to classes and scheduled activities on time, and being the first point of contact for any issues or problems that may arise.
  • Help organize and lead extra-curricular activities.
  • Must be willing to work with groups of students to facilitate a service-learning project.
  • Must be willing to work up to 1.5 hours of faculty/staff assistance per day, working in a positive and supportive capacity with faculty/staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Governor's School counselors must be mature, energetic, sociable, and enjoy working with teens. Counselors must also be flexible and demonstrate an ability to think and act cooperatively with other counselors, resident life directors, program directors, and faculty.

In addition to competitive pay, all counselors are provided free on-campus housing and meals.
