The Madison Trio – Kwan Yi, Kristin Lee and Mihai Marica

The Madison Trio is the first of three concerts in the 2015-16 season by the Radford University Department of Music. This concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

The Madison Trio features piano faculty Kwan Yi with cohorts Kristin Lee on violin and Mihai Marica on cello for an evening of classical music. Works by Ravel, Brahms and Schubert highlight the program.

Yi has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kimmel Center, Kennedy Center, Chicago Orchestra Hall, Auditorium du Louvre, Suntory Hall and Seoul Arts Center. He has frequently collaborated with Itzhak Perlman and Roberto Diaz on national tours. A recipient of many honors and prizes, his awards include Mieczyslaw Munz Prize, National Federation of Music Clubs Award, first prizes in the Ima Hogg Competition, Sorantin International Competition and the Schmidbauer International Piano Competition and prizes in the Sendai International Music Competition in Japan, and the Trio di Trieste International Chamber Music Competition in Italy.

Lee, a faculty member at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York, is the winner of the Avery Fisher Grant and prize-winner of the Naumburg International Violin Competition.

Marica is the winner of the Irving Klein International Competition and Luis Sigall International Cello Competition. Both are members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and international touring artists.

Yi and Lee have a long musical history together. They met during their high school years at the Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island, New York. This is a summer festival for talented musicians directed by the legendary violinist, Mr. Itzhak Perlman.

“When I came to New York to study at Juilliard for my graduate program, I reconnected with Kristin and started working on piano and violin sonatas and later entered the Trio di Trieste International Chamber Music Competition where we won multiple prizes,” Yi said.

Both had passion for the piano trio genre and decided to form one. Lee knew Marica through their work at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

“We read a few pieces with him for fun and the musical chemistry was such that we asked him if he would be interested in forming a trio, which he agreed happily,” Yi said.

Because they all met in New York, their name, the Madison Trio, refers back to the iconic street – Madison Avenue. Following the upcoming concert, the trio performs in Norway at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition.

Also in September is a faculty voice recital by Joann Martinson, soprano, scheduled for Sept. 18. The Faculty Jazz Quartet in concert follows Sept. 24. All are free admission and start at 7:30 p.m. at the Performance Hall in the Covington Center.
