Kudos and Congratulations

Spring and summer may seem quiet on campus at Radford University, but looks are deceiving. The College of Visual and Performing Arts was extremely active with summer school, Quest, Radford University Ballet Youth’s International Summer Intensive Program and Governor’s School. And several of our professors, students and alumni sent of word of their recent achievements.

Steve Arbury – Professor of Art and Museum Director: Woman’s Art Journal published Steve Arbury’s feature on Dorothy Gillespie in their spring/summer edition.

Harold Bailey – This senior music major performed at Carnegie Hall in May.

Z. L. Feng – Professor of Art: Feng's watercolor “Mountain Man” won the President’s Award at the Louisiana Watercolor Society’s 46th Annual International Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. His new painting “MVP # 2" received the Second Place Award at the Society of Watercolor Artists’ 2016 International Juried Exhibition in Fort Worth, Texas.

Cynthia Flanagan ’16
– This recent music alumna won a Gold Medal in the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival for her classical instrumental (piano) solo. She is one of approximately 20 winners who are invited to perform live, during the October 2016 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival Stage Show in Jackson, Mississippi.

Jerry Frech ’14 – This art department alumnus received honors in acrylic painting and military combat experience in the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival.

Paul Gartner – Senior graphic design student, Paul Gartner won a National Student Silver ADDY Award for his Mug Hard Root Beer packaging design.

Kevin Kwon – This MFA studio graduate student had a work accepted into a competition First Street Gallery’s 2016 MFA National Competition in NYC.

Jeremy Marks ’16 – This music alumnus is now a member of the “Old Guard,” the 3d U.S. Infantry, and is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, serving our nation since 1784. The Old Guard is the Army's official ceremonial unit and escort to the president.

Anna Nicholson ’16 – This recent design alumna won second place in the residence category of the Sherwin William’s 2016 STIR Student Design Challenge. She also won the inaugural Facebook Fan Favorite award, with more than 350 votes.

Gary Skeen '09
– This music department alumnus was one of eight nominees to win the Virginia Lottery's 2016 Super Teacher Award. Skeen is currently band director at Virginia High School in Bristol.

Shaun Whiteside – Assistant Professor of Art: The Bower Center's 2016 Annual National Juried Exhibition featured Shaun C. Whiteside '11 work, who won First Place for his painting “Elegy to the U.S. Republic no. 2 (after Motherwell).” The gallery is located in Bedford, Virginia.

Megan Zalecki ’12 – This art alumna’s paintings will be on exhibit at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Virginia from Aug. 22 – Sept. 29. The show is titled "New Works" and will feature mixed media paintings on canvas and panel.
