The Southwest Virginia Juried Student Photography Competition opened Feb. 19 to an audience of over 100 people. The exhibition at the Radford University Art Museum Downtown includes 52 photographic artworks by undergraduate students from 11 regional universities and colleges.

“I’m very impressed by the variety and quality of work that students in this area are creating,” said Assistant Professor of Art Andrew Ross, who organized the competition. “For some of these students, this is the first time they’ve had their work displayed in a gallery. I think it’s important for students to look at their photographs as more than just what satisfies a course requirement.”

Diana Bloomfield, a photographic artist from Raleigh, North Carolina, served as the juror for this competition. She was on hand at the opening to announce the winners and share with the students some of the qualities she saw in the works.

“Diana made the award decisions through a ‘blind’ process. She didn’t know what school students went to, their year, gender, etc.,” said Ross. “She told the students at the opening reception how much she enjoyed being able to look at the work solely on the merits of the image.”

Awards included first, second, and third place in silver print, digital, and alternative process categories. The juror also selected a number of honorable mentions for a total of 19 awards presented. Radford students won six awards.

Following the opening reception, students were invited to a portfolio-sharing event. With their photographs spread out on tables, students had the opportunity to talk about their work with each other, faculty, and guests.
