Painted Songs & Stories: Contemporary Gond Art from India

Sept. 3 – Oct. 25
Opening events: talk, performance and reception on Sept. 3 at 5 p.m.

Brightly colorful depictions of tribal mythology delight the eye during this exhibition of contemporary Gond art from central India, curated by John H. Bowles. He is author of "Painted Songs & Stories: The Hybrid Flowerings of Contemporary Pardhan Gond Art," published in 2009 by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage). The Gonds are a tribal people who first came to popular international attention through Rudyard Kipling’s "Jungle Book," which describes them as “. . . the oldest race in India — the aboriginal owners of the land.” Gond artists Venkat Raman Singh Shyam and Saroj Shyam will attend the exhibition opening. In the center of the gallery's floor, Saroj Shyam will create a ritual digna (a traditional design applied by the Gonds to the walls and floors of their homes).

Beyond the Tartan: Nicholas & Kate Stewart

Sept. 10 – Oct. 10
Opening reception on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.

Radford University alumni, Nicholas and Kate Stewart invite you to experience a collection of paintings and sculptures investigating abstraction of nature and life. Nicholas explores both the illusion and reality of tessellations and patterns throughout existence by surface application and physical breaks in the canvas. Kate finds inspiration in the colors of butterflies, and the structure of her paintings is influenced by their shape and form. While these portfolios make for a cohesive body of work, the variety of techniques cater to a wide audience.

A beautifully executed, extremely contemporary, historically relevant and deeply personal exhibition inspired by Italian American / Jewish artist Eric Finzi's family's experience (in Ferrara, Italy, from the rise of Mussolini until the start of World War II) as told in the 1962 historical novel and later Academy Award winning film, “The Garden of the Finzi-Continis.” This is a gorgeous and compelling collection of contemporary works that help provoke dialogue on many topics and create the opportunity to engage different university departments.
