Biology student research awards announced

Biology faculty have selected this year's student research award winners.

The Ruth Bricker Painter ($3000) award went to: Luc White – “Cross-dating Death: Applications of Dendrochronology for Early Detection of Emerald Ash Borer Invasion and Tree Mortality” under the mentorship of Dr. Christine Small, and Dr. Stockton Maxwell

Support for this award comes from an endowment established by Ruth Bricker Painter, who was a 1928 graduate of Radford College and a high school science teacher.

Four ($1000) Biology Research Awards were selected, as well:

  • Jack Koger - “Does Age Matter? Insect Biodiversity in Urban Cemeteries” under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Foltz and Dr. Jamie Lau
  • Austin Swallow - “Stress modulation, cognition, and sociality in captive Zebra finches” under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Davis
  • Thomas Ausburne – “Utilizing the basic molecular tools to investigate the presence of pathogenic microsporidians in honeybees” under the mentorship of Dr. Chet Bhatta
  • Antonio Russo - “Songbird Public Engagement and Outreach Website” under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Foltz

Congratulations to all those who will be supported in their research - we look forward to seeing the outcomes of these successful student-faculty collaborations!
