Biology faculty receive awards at May Commencement

Several biology faculty members received college- or university-level awards at May Commencement. These are high honors, and we congratulate all the winners below.

Davis

Dr. Jason Davis is the recipient of the 2016 Donald Dedmon Distinguished Teaching Professor Award. This award "recognizes and rewards outstanding teaching at Radford University." Awardees have an outstanding teaching record with demonstrations of creative methods of teaching inside and outside of the classroom. Davis has been instrumental in getting the RARE (Radford Amazonian Research Expedition) Program off the ground - an interdisciplinary course that annually sends students to Peru to conduct scientific research experiments. He is also the Associate Director of the Honors Academy.

tara-Phelps-Durr

Dr. Tara Phelps-Durr is the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Faculty Advising Award. This award is given to faculty who have a strong record in advising students inside and outside of the classroom, and an ability to go the extra mile to help monitor and mentor students as they progress through the major. She has been especially active in guiding freshman students through their first year in the major. Dr. Phelps-Durr also was a national Master Educator Program (MEP) grant recipient by the American Society of Plant Biologists in December 2014.

karen-francl-faw

Dr. Karen Powers is the recipient of the 2016 CSAT Outstanding Teaching Award. This award is given to the college fauclty member who is successful in teaching and mentoring undergraduates. Faculty members are nominated for this award by their students and college student leaders select the winning nomination. Dr. Powers was nominated by students because of her willingness and ability to encourage student development and success as research students. Students in Powers' lab currently assist with endangered bat surveys across the Commonwealth. Many of Powers' former research students have gone on to successful positions as graduate students in wildlife biology and project leaders at environmental consulting companies.
