Future Science Educators

Are you interested in teaching science in high school?

In order to meet current state licensure requirements, we suggest that Biology majors work specific electives into their schedule. These courses would meet many of the requirements for our General Concentration or our Pre-Health Concentration.

The following courses are part of the core curriculum for all biology majors, and would not constitute additional or elective classes:

  • Ecology (BIOL 131)
  • Genetics (BIOL 231 would fulfill this)
  • Organic Chemistry (BIOL 301/302)
  • Mathematics (MATH 119)
  • Statistics (STAT 119)

The following courses are required in some of the Biology concentrations and considered electives in others.

  • Molecular Biology (BIOL 450)
  • Botany (BIOL 215 or 476)
  • Zoology (BIOL 216 or 464)
  • Anatomy/Physiology (BIOL 410/411 - only 1 semester required for licensure)
  • Physics (PHYS 111/112 - only 1 semester required for licensure)
  • Earth Sciences (many GEOS courses accepted)

Those interested in pursuing a M.S. in Education at Radford University need not complete all of these courses during their undergraduate career. Indeed, logisitical planning might be challenging, as many of these courses are offered on a rotational basis. However, all of these courses should be completed prior to the completion of the M.S. degree.

Additionally, those interested in getting a jump-start in their M.S. program in Education may begin taking required education courses as an undergraduate. The RU School of Teacher Education and Leadership provides a checklist of courses for students seeking an M.S. in Education, with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction and Secondary Biology licensure combined. That checklist is found here

Note: Admission the Teacher Education Program is a prerequisite to register for some education courses. Students must have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA or better [plus additional admissions requirements] to get started as an undergraduate, and a minimum 2.75 GPA for admittance to the Master's program.
