Big Plans for Radford University PRSSA Chapter

Elonna Wright, PRSSA president 2016-2017

Five weeks into the Fall 2016 semester and Radford’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter is getting the ball rolling as far as events go.

PRSSA is an organization for students interested or majoring in public relations and communications.

Elonna Wright, the PRSSA president, says that they are focusing on fundraising this semester to try and bring in more members. Wright was just appointed PRSSA president this semester.

“Juggling my courses and my job and delegating everything is a challenge,” Wright said, adding about the PRSSA, “But I’m glad to be a part of it.”

The PRSSA Radford chapter has not been hesitant to get involved with the student body this semester. PRSSA has already had one bake sale this semester and plan to have another one on Oct. 21. PRSSA also had a bowling night to help encourage member growth.

Wright emphasized that PRSSA’s goal this semester was to gain more members, and the best way to achieve that goal was “promotion, promotion, promotion.”

“Promotion is so important,” Wright said. “It is how we find more people who might be interested.”

The Blue Ridge chapter of Public Relations Society of America came to Radford University on Oct. 13 to have a luncheon and meet with the Radford PRSSA chapter and speak with them about professions in public relations.

Radford PRSSA also had a seminar on Oct. 17 about ethics and diversity.

Wright said that while public relations might be in the name, PRSSA is for anyone, no matter the concentration.

“It’s everywhere. From the TV shows you watch, to the shoes on your feet. It’s all brands and that’s all public relations. We get your foot in the door and show you what that’s like.”

PRSSA has executive meetings every Monday at 6 p.m. and general body meetings every other Monday at 6:30 p.m.
